Why do you get white spots on your nails?

Answer:
Any injury to the nail bed, where the nail grows from, will produce a white mark on the nail as it grows out. It is not a deficiency but an injury.
Where you knock your fingers. Its the keratin growing out.
from paint
I think I've heard that's a sign of calcium deficiency. Not sure though
its when they get bashed or knocked. Absolutely nothing to do with any deficiencies.although.a complete 'white out' seemingly could be lack of zinc.
I was told this was due to lack of calcium... but I also heard it can simply be down to accidently knocking the nail and that leaves mark in the nail til it grows out?You know whats good Sally Hansan (can't remember product name!?) but it clear pink in the bottle and clear on your nails, it really helps give your nails some nutrients - its stopped any white white spots i ever had... Hope this help :-)
It's a sign you are no consuming enough calcium!
calcium deficiency. it means you are not getting enough dairy into your diet
The first answer is correct. It is the only correct answer. White spots in your nails are just from bumping them on something. Though you could get white spots from paint if you are painting something white, white spots are never caused by a calcium deficiency, or any deficiency for that matter.
Its called (leukonychia) and is caused by mild trauma such as banging or scuffing your nails. Nothing to worry about.
Can also be due to hitting ur nail hard on something etc...
there are a number of total-body ("systemic") conditions that can leave white spots on your otherwise unblemished talons. Certain nutritional deficiencies, particularly a lack of zinc or protein in your diet, can cause a nearly total whiteout of your nail except for the tips or even a pattern of white bands across the width of the nail. Cirrhosis, a form of chronic liver disease usually brought about by alcoholism, can also result in nails that are almost completely white. Keep in mind, though, that white spots in that case are rarely the primary flag for diagnosis but usually occur well after this disease has made its presence known in other ways.

Its called Leukonychia, its white spots or streaks on your nails caused by injury or ill health.
the reason you get white spots on your nails is; when your body is low in zink your body can not absorb enough calcium which results in the wht spots. you ccan get zink supplements in health shop. zink is produced in thyroid gland might be worth having this checked if you have alot and regularly.
Why do you assume that I get white spots on my nails. my nails are perfectly formed and well looked after, I don't know why some people get this condition, but I presume it's by sticking your fingers into places where they shouldn't be.
Really interesting article about this on BBC radio 4 about a fortnight ago. Their expert said that it is nothing to do with calcium deficiency but just where you bang the nail or nail bed. The nail is made in layers and the white spot is where the layers have seperated slightly and refract the light differently. She was doing a PHD in the subject so I suspect she knew what she was talking about!
lack of calcium
The reason that white specks appear under the nails is a deficency in ZINC not calcium. If you buy zinc tablets and take them for a couple of days they will go away. It's worth buying a tub because flecks can appear from time to time.
